Fasting depends on what was ordered. Glucose and lipid panels usually require eight to twelve hours; most other tests do not. Your requisition should say, and it is checked before the sample is taken rather than after.

Can you take blood for another doctor’s prescription?

Yes. Bring the requisition and the sample is collected here and sent for analysis. The result goes back to the physician who ordered it, because they hold the context that makes it mean something.

How long until I have the result?

One to five working days for most routine panels; some specialised assays take longer. You will be told the expected timeframe for your particular tests at the appointment.

I am difficult to draw from. Is that a problem?

Say so when you arrive rather than after the first attempt. Being well hydrated genuinely helps, warmth helps, and knowing in advance changes which arm and which technique is tried first.

How it works

A sample is only as good as its handling.

Most of what can go wrong with a blood test goes wrong before the analysis. A tube filled in the wrong order, under-filled, shaken rather than inverted, or left at the wrong temperature can shift a result enough to matter — and the laboratory has no way to know it happened.

That is the whole reason this is a service rather than an errand: the right tubes in the right order, labelled against your file at the chairside, and transported under the conditions the assay requires. The analysis itself is done by an accredited external laboratory, and the result returns to the physician who ordered it.
