Japanese encephalitis vaccine

Japanese encephalitis is spread by mosquitoes that breed in rice fields and around pig farming across rural Asia. Most infections cause nothing. The small number that reach the brain are severe, and there is no treatment — only prevention.

Who it is for

Is this one for you?

Eligibility is a medical question, not a preference. A physician reviews your history before any dose is given.

    How it works

An inactivated virus, and no treatment if you skip it.

The vaccine contains Japanese encephalitis virus that has been grown and then chemically inactivated. It cannot replicate and cannot cause the disease, but the immune system still recognises its proteins and builds antibodies against them.

The reason a rare disease justifies a vaccine at all is the arithmetic of its outcomes. Fewer than one in a hundred infections produces encephalitis. But of those that do, roughly a third are fatal and a further large share leave permanent neurological damage, and there is no antiviral treatment — care is supportive only. A low probability multiplied by that severity is what makes prevention worth two injections before a long rural trip.

    1. 01

      The dose

An injection into the muscle of the upper arm. It takes a few seconds.

    2. 02

      The response

Your immune system learns to recognise the target and builds antibodies against it over the following weeks.

    3. 03

      The memory

Those cells stay. If you meet the real thing later, the response is already prepared.

    Your visit

    One appointment, about 20 minutes.

Most of it is the review beforehand and the wait afterwards.

    1. 01

      First

      The review

Your vaccination history, your medical history, and what you are actually due — which is sometimes not what you booked for.

    2. 02

      Then

      The dose

An injection into the upper arm, recorded in your medical file.

    3. 03

      15 minutes

      The wait

You stay in the clinic afterwards. Immediate reactions are rare, and this is where they would be managed.

    Who performs it

    A physician reviews it first.

A vaccination at a medical clinic is not the same transaction as one at a counter. A physician reviews your history first — what you have had, what you are due, what you are travelling to, and whether anything in your record changes the answer — and the dose is recorded in a medical file rather than on a card you are asked to keep.

What to do around your dose.

    • Bring your vaccination record

Anything you have. It changes what you are due.

    • List your medications

Some affect how well a vaccine works.

    • Eat and drink beforehand

It reduces the chance of feeling faint.

    • Wear a short sleeve

The dose goes into the upper arm.
