How soon after exposure can I test?

The window period depends on the infection. Some are detectable within a week or two, others take up to three months. Testing too early gives a negative that means nothing, so the timing is worked out at the appointment and you may be asked to come back.

Yes. It is a medical record held under the same rules as the rest of your file. Certain infections are reportable to public health by law, which is explained to you before testing rather than afterwards.

What if something comes back positive?

You are told directly, given the treatment or referral that applies, and told what it means for partners. A positive result on most of these is a treatable problem, and the appointment exists so it does not go undetected.

Do I need symptoms to be tested?

No, and waiting for them defeats the purpose. Most of these infections are silent for months or years. Screening without symptoms is the normal reason to do this.

How it works

The window period is the thing to get right.

Screening tests do not look for the infection itself so much as for the evidence it leaves — antibodies your immune system has made, or genetic material from the organism. Both take time to appear. That interval is the window period, and it is different for every infection: a few days for some, up to three months for others.

A test taken inside the window comes back negative whether or not you are infected, which is worse than not testing because it is believed. So the useful conversation happens before the sample, not after it: what you were exposed to, when, and therefore which tests are meaningful today and which need repeating later.
